The architecture of Le Renzo

Renzo Piano, the Genoese architect behind the Centre Pompidou in Paris and The Shard in London, designed Le Renzo as a long building with a silhouette inspired by a ship, a reference to the maritime history of Monaco.

  • On pilotis: the building rests about five metres above the ground, which preserves the sea view from the older waterfront and frees the ground level for a public promenade, shops and restaurants
  • Façade: white marine aluminium cladding, with balconies facing the horizon and vertical balancing bars
  • Glazing: large windows that bring natural light into the apartments and frame the sea
  • Environment: sustainable construction principles, as part of the first national eco-district of Monaco

The elevation of the building stands out among the residences of the Principality: from the promenade, you walk beneath Le Renzo towards the sea.

The design answers a constraint of the site. Monaco has little land, so the district gains its space from the sea, and the architect lifted the building to keep the ground level open. For an owner, this choice has practical effects: the apartments sit above the promenade, away from the street-level movement, and the long façade gives many rooms an orientation towards the sea.

Le Renzo was designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the agency of the Italian architect Renzo Piano, who also designed the Centre Pompidou in Paris and The Shard in London. The building forms part of the Mareterra district, where other architects, including Foster + Partners, Stefano Boeri and Tadao Ando, designed villas, and Valode & Pistre drew the master plan.

According to Bloomberg, the penthouse of about 2,500 m² on five floors was bought in 2024 by the Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov for a reported €471 million. The buyer's holding company confirmed the purchase but not the price, so treat the amount as a reported value rather than an official figure.

Access depends on the network of the agency and on a precise brief: floor, orientation, terraces, parking and timing. Plan the purchase costs in addition to the price, and confirm the rates with a notary.
